Some of the extreme behaviors that you have identified are probably not present in the current generation of practitioners. I am sorry about the experiences you have had and respect your tenacity.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648987284969270841.post-59196865554273510332018-10-03T06:10:31.717-04:002018-10-03T06:10:31.717-04:00Awesome article! However I know similar stories like not accepting corrections from a woman, but taking the same advice from a male student.
Don't put it into "sexism" ... just put it into: people are simply dumb. The same thing is surprisingly done by female students, they sometimes don't accept a correction by another female, but are happy to take the same advice from a male. Stupid, isn't it?

I'm happy that you are a fine Lady. And that we are not living in the 18 hundreds, you probably had sliced and diced and killed most of your offenders in duels :D (just kidding of course).

One of my teachers, Inaba Minoru, one said: "With a sword, men and women are equal. Actually, in a fight I would bet on the woman. Even more so with a dagger (Tanto)"

Keep up your good work, sensei!Aos Enkimaruhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12410186193224408629noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648987284969270841.post-49413552905894464722018-10-01T10:44:18.388-04:002018-10-01T10:44:18.388-04:00Great Article, an insight for anyone who faces dis...Great Article, an insight for anyone who faces discrimination in any form and one I'll be sharing with my daughters. For many, however, there's always going to be that little sexist, "Yeah, but no way will they ever be as good as, or better than, a man" voice in the back of their heads. And we who train with them KNOW it's there.

Great article, and I will be sharing this on my Stick Chick Blog page on Facebook tomorrow, because I want my readers - mostly guys, after all - to read it!Hild of Hild's Hallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17267467050107151986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2648987284969270841.post-54343381658246076992018-09-30T22:00:35.130-04:002018-09-30T22:00:35.130-04:00Thank you for this, Deborah Klens-Bigman. You speak for many of us.
I have been fortunate for most of my budo life, but there have been uncomfortable moments, from the aikido classmate who did everything he could to intimidate me and denigrate my efforts, to the aikijujutsu instructor who informed me, point-blank, that he would "never teach a woman how to fight with this stuff."

The best thing we can do, is persevere and work twice as hard to overcome those obstacles heaped atop the normal challenges of learning a martial art. The best "revenge," is to become good enough that we are given, at the very least, a grudging respect for our skills. It brings to mind the old saying, "You don't have to like me, but your WILL respect me."

And to all of the men who have given us a fair shake at excelling in our arts, and who have been wonderful training partners, sempai and teachers, I thank you all for recognizing that gender should not matter on this path, only dedication to and passion for these arts we pursue together.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12164665132390254033noreply@blogger.com
