If all they want is to look better and stronger or are searching for physical gains then in later years, when that begins to fade, and it will, what's left? At my age of 67 I am happy that my "Budo" has been approached with the spirit of Shoshin (beginners mind) and I prepared for this so many years ago. At 60 celebrating my kanreki I started again...a new beginning...and began relearning everything (I think) I know. It's a circle and I keep circling around to new beginnings. Even in the way I drive! I guess you can say my life is kata. All this sort of reminds me of something that should be kept in mind in our practice...Mushotoku.
Thanks...and I'm waiting for your new book to arrive in the mail...looking forward to it! In his well regarded curriculum, Verbal Judo, he states Mushin as a open minded, unbiased and clear mind. Inspired by Dr. Thompson’s work inspired my desire to be of service to the membership of my department, the New York City Police Department. I had the great fortune to devote over twenty of my over thirty five years, to the research, development and presentation of a variety of initiatives aimed at technical, tactical and tactful acuity of the membership of NYPD from recruits to in service personnel ranging from veteran officers, newly minted detectives, supervisors and executives. My own lifelong study, practice and teaching of traditional Japanese martial arts has enabled me to define Mushin as “emotional detachment”. It’s the ability to remain tactically present and vigilant, yet free from distraction. My work focused on raising Officer Safety & Professionalism while decreasing Animosity and Stress. Much of this was based on what I termed the Three E’s: Ego deflation, Ethics and EMPATHY. For the most part the message was well received and still remains the answer for subsequent administrations seeking “conflict management and deescalation training.” For more information I can be contacted at KeisatsuDojo.com
OSU!
